ROBYN RECOMMENDS: pH Stix

My husband, Ian, does a wonderful job of maintaining our garden.  Our lawn suffered terribly last year as we had a very hot summer with drastic water restrictions.  We also have a couple of beautiful large trees which leach the nutrients out of the ground.

Our beautiful green lawn turned into a dust bowl and the only thing to survive was weeds.   A week ago we had a ‘lawn doctor’ inspect the dust bowl.  Out came his testing kit and, guess what, our soil was extremely acidic !!

Horror, shame !!   Fancy Robyn, the alkaline queen, having an acidic lawn.  Of course it is Ian’s fault as the lawn is his responsibility.

The ‘lawn doctor’ prescribed a dose of garden lime and lo and behold, within 1 week our lawn has brightened up and is looking nearly back to its normal brilliant self.

We are very familiar about the importance of the correct pH for gardens, fish ponds and swimming pools.  Thankfully more and more people are now becoming aware about the importance of having the correct pH for the body.

Just as our body temperature must be maintained at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, our blood is ideally maintained at pH 7.365 – very midly alkaline.

How do you know if you are acidic?  Well, for my lawn, I only had to look at the window to see that it was stressed, unwell, and struggling to stay alive.  If you go to my website you can sign up for some free check lists and self tests to see if your body is acidic.  You will also receive lots of helpful advice to get you started on an alkaline lifestyle.

It is possible to get blood tests down but that requires a visit to the doctor which can be expensive.  Next time your doctor requests blood tests ask him to include a pH test.

A very inexpensive, painless and accurate way is to check the pH of your urine and saliva using Diagnostic pH Test Strips.

Urine:

One of the principal systems your body uses for eliminating acids is the renal system (your kidneys).  The normal rate of acid excretion through the kidneys gives urine a pH that falls between 6.75 and 7.25.

Testing your body’s pH will determine if your body is eliminating a normal amount of acid or if your body is too acidic.  If the acid excretion rate is higher than what would be considered optimal, your urinary pH will be more acidic or ‘low’ on the pH colour chart (ranging from 4.5 to 6.5).

A low pH urinary reading is an indication that you are low in alkaline minerals and high in acid, meaning your body is out of pH balance.

Saliva:

Another indicator of pH balance in your body is the pH of your saliva.  When your body has an abundant supply of mineral buffers available, your saliva pH will read between 7.0 and 7.5 (and as high as 8.0 immediately following a meal).

A low saliva pH reading is an indication that you are low in alkaline minerals and high in acid, meaning your body is out of pH balance.

It is important to get both the saliva and urine testing in the optimal levels.  Having either the saliva or urine in the correct range is not an indication that you are alkaline – you need both urine and saliva to be in the safe range (and it is best to keep a record over several days to get an average).

Like everything else in life, when you reach your goal you don’t jump up and down and say “I’m OK” and then go back to eating, drinking and stressing like you did before.  Just like losing weight and getting fit, it is a LIFESTYLE change that you have to constantly monitor, check and bring yourself back on line.

It is all about getting the correct balance.  Now, go and drink your glass of alkaline water!

Signs of Dehydration

Recently I spent 5 magical days in Bali – total relaxation and bliss.  The first thing I pack when I travel away from home is my Waterman Travel jug.  The Waterman is great to have in your hotel room to refill  your water bottles and use for cups of tea etc.

When I am out and about during the day I use my Fill2Pure bottle.  This bottle can be refilled from any source and you can be confident that it removes 99.99% of all nasties.

We travelled by budge airline and I was horrified that these airlines do not provide unlimited water at no charge.  Luckily I had my own supply of water (I object very strongly at paying money for acidic water in a plastic bottle!) and refilled my Fill2Pure bottle many times both in the waiting area and on the plane.  However, I noticed that most of the passengers chose to purchase cola drinks, tea or coffee rather than water.

Can you get enough water from just drinking tea or coffee?  The short answer to your question is “no.” Thanks to their caffeine content, both tea and coffee are diuretics – that is, they cause the body to lose water. And you do need the water – when you don’t get enough, your cells start to draw water from the bloodstream. Blood gets sludgy, your heart must work harder, and your body starts to redirect blood away from less vital areas.

Unfortunately most Australian’s are dehydrated and simply don’t know it.  Hydration is so important – you and I are 75% water.  The body is 75% water, the brain, heart, lungs are approx 60 – 85% water.  You need water to function normally.

When you are dehydrated you may be nauseous and your skin, mouth and eyes will feel dry.  You may feel dizzy, have cramp and headaches.  All are symptoms of extreme dehydration.  When you are dehydrated the body cannot flush out the toxins and acids from our body.

If your mouth feel drys you are already dehydrated.  Strangely enough, the more dehydrated you become, the less you feel the desire to drink.   I know many people who have lived for years without drinking water during the day (except for 1/2 glass to wash down their medications at night!).

If you cannot give up drinking coffee, tea, cola, alcohol completely then try to reduce the amount consumed each day.  A simple goal is to start the day by drinking 2 glasses of water to flush the toxins consumed during the night.  Every time you have an acidic beverage make sure you drink 2 glasses of alkaline water before reaching for another acidic drink.  Obviously, it would be much better to replace your caffeine drinks with herbal teas or water with a squeeze of lemon, chlorophyll, sea minerals or Alkaline Booster.

EWG’s 2011 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in produce

EWG just released its 2011 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce — an update to the handy guide that helps you avoid the Dirty Dozen, conventional fruits and vegetables that are highest in pesticide residues — and choose items from the Clean 15 list instead. Eat healthier and save money at the same time!

What’s new? The popular apple is now at the top of the Dirty Dozen as the fruit or veggie highest in pesticides. And for the first time, cilantro (coriander) is also on the list. Testing by federal scientists found 33 unapproved pesticides on 44 percent of the cilantro samples tested — the highest percentage of unapproved pesticides recorded on any item since EWG started tracking the data in 1995. Mushrooms also make their first appearance on the Shopper’s Guide as part of the Clean 15.

Do you drink enough water in winter?

“I tend to forget drinking water even when it’s hot, and you expect me to remember to do that when it’s cold?”

As the weather cools down, most of us tend to reach for something that is going to warm us up from the inside.  A tall glass of refreshing alkaline water is not nearly as tempting as a cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or mulled wine.

It is just as important to stay hydrated during winter as in summer.  The drier conditions, due to lack of humidity and heating in our homes, offices, cars and shopping centres, can make us become very dehydrated.

Do you find drinking water in the winter difficult? Do you suffer from dry and itchy skin, chapped lips, dry coughs, nosebleeds, acne, or even headaches?  If you do, it may be because you’re dehydrated and YOU NEED TO DRINK MORE WATER !! (alkaline is best of course)

The best way to start the day is to drink 2 – 3 glasses of water as soon as you rise.  If you find it too difficult to drink cold water these cold mornings substitute for hot water with a squeeze or slice of lemon.  Lemon stimulates the kidneys and liver, is alkalizing, great for digestion and bring relief from colds and flu.  Lemons are very plentiful and cheap at the moment.

Another favourite of mine is to pour boiling water over fresh grated ginger in a cup (or small teapot).  Fresh mint or parsley also makes a delicious hot drink.

If you don’t have any fresh produce (or time is limited), then herbal teas are a great alternative.  Always have some herbal teabags handy for a quick cuppa.  If you are away from home all day carry some in your  handbag.

Most of the time when we reach for a coffee, tea or alcoholic drink it is not because we are thirsty – it is more to get that lovely cosy feeling of sharing time with a friend or loved one.  Herbal teas are a great substitute for the caffeine / alcohol fix.

There are many delicous herbal teas available.Herbal tea - better option than caffeine for hydrating

LICORICE TEA

My current favourite! The licorice plant has been used medicinally for thousands of years.

Tea made from licorice root acts as an expectorant for bronchitis and coughs. Licorice tea is also beneficial as a stomach tonic, helping to reduce excessive acid and generate protective mucus. Licorice has also been used as an ingredient in tea blends to purify the blood.

ROOIBOS TEA
Rooibos is not a true tea, but a herb.  It is absolutely PACKED with antioxidants and flavonoids.  It’s packed full of nutrients including calcium, manganese, zinc and magnesium – all powerful alkaline minerals.  It is caffeine free and has low tannin levels.

DANDELION TEA
This is a great tea for cleansing the blood and liver. It helps to alleviate constipation and bloating. Women may find that it helps to alleviate the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, it is also known to be good for sufferers of gout.

PEPPERMINT TEA
This is an excellent tea for calming the digestive tract, as well as easing nausea and headaches. As an added bonus it can help with bad breath.

LEMON TEA
Lemons are known to cleans and stimulate the liver and kidneys as well as easing heartburn and bloating.

GINGER TEA
A brilliant tea first thing in the morning as the slight bite of ginger will help to wake you up and keep you alert. Also known to help with upset stomach, nausea, soothe menstrual pains, ward off colds, and help to reduce sore throats.

Would you pay $4 for a glass of tap water?

Would you pay $4 for a glass of tap water?

A three-hatted Sydney restaurant is set to charge $4 per diner for tap water as part of an environmental initiative by the owner and chef, Mark Best.

Marque Restaurant in Surry Hills has installed a $6,000 Italian-made filtration system that filters, chills and carbonates tap water.

Previously, the restaurant was selling 30 cases of bottled water a week.

By ditching the bottled product, the restaurant misses out on lucrative mark-ups.

”It just began to seem sillier and sillier. The water had to be stored downstairs so staff had to take it there, then bring it back up from the storage room, refrigerate it, store it then take the empties down for recycling, and I’m not kidding myself that it was all recycled.
I think a lot probably ends up in landfill and I started feeling more and more uncomfortable with that.”

Well, CONGRATULATIONS MARK BEST on taking the initiative to stop selling expensive bottled water and further polluting the environment.
Most brands of bottled water are acidic and oxidising (and very questionable as to what contaminants and heavy metals are contained).
However, by investing $6,000 in a machine that filters, chills and carbonates the water is, in my opinion, a very poor investment.

Filtering water is essential but carbonated water is even more acidic thanbottled water !!

For an investment of $2,000 Mr Best could have purchased the top of the range ionizer / alkalizer machine that would produce an unlimited amount of clean, ionized, antioxidant and alkaline water.  Ongoing cost would be approx 3 – 5 cents per litre.

For the same investment (or less) you can have this great quality water in your home.

Do you know that in Japan most bars and restaurants serve and make their ice out of ionized, alkaline water.  Why ?  They know that ionized, alkaline water is the best water for the body (as well as the best cure for hangovers).

Ionized, alkaline water should be served in every restaurant, cafe, hospital, office, school, gym, health spa, clinic, EVERYWHERE !!

I have several clients who own restaurants.  They have an ionizer machine in their home for their family but still insist on selling water in plastic bottles to their clients.  Why?   Because it is a good revenue earner.

You can help educate the business world by asking for ionized alkaline water whenever you are out and about.  It would be great if you could give them my contact details also !!

Tuscan Bean Soup

Taken from Alkaline Diet Recipe Book (Page 55)

Serves:  6

Preparation Time:  30 minutes

Ingredients:
2 tbs (30 ml) olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
4 cloves garlic, chopped
3 cups (680g) chopped tomatoes
6 cups (900g) tinned cannellini beans
5 cups (1.25 L) water
1/2 tsp (3g) Himalayan Salt
Freshly ground pepper, to taste
1 cup (75g) spelt pasta shells, or other small pasta shape
1/4 cup (9g) fresh basil leaves, coarsely chopped

Instructions:
Steam fry the onions, celery, and garlic until tender. Do this in a few spoons of water in a large pan.

Once it’s all nice and tender you can add the chopped tomatoes (juice n’ all) and warm this over a medium to low heat, breaking up the tomatoes so that it is all chunked down in nice small pieces. Cook this together for about 15-20 mins until everything is infused together.

Add the lovely creamy-textured cannellini beans (drained and rinsed), the water, salt, pepper and cook over a medium-low heat for another 20 mins.

Once the beans are soft, add the spelt pasta and cook for another 10-15 mins until it is al dente.

Once the soup has cooled slightly, stir in the olive oil and add the basil leaves.

This soup has fibre and protein, is tasty and alkaline.  Give it a try!
